The Riley Group’s Geotechnical department is looking for several interns to learn the ropes of geotechnical construction work, support our summer project workload, and gain experience in a field that lets you see our region in a new light by observing all that goes into making our built environment thrive.

This position will hone your environmental field skills by familiarizing you with the operation of technical field equipment and environmental sampling techniques. We encourage our employees to become experts in the services they are providing, thus we offer paid professional training. These programs will aid you in your ability to perform the position effectively, safely and aid in your pursuit of obtaining your professional license(s).

As a Geotechnical Technician with RGI, you will perform geotechnical construction observation services.

General Responsibilities:

As a Geotechnical Technician I with RGI you will work under close supervision of higher level technicians or staff professionals, perform routine field and/or laboratory work, transport samples or documents, and perform non-technical functions and office tasks.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Observation and documentation of construction processes.
  • Performs sampling or testing as directed.
  • Provides assistance to other field and/or laboratory personnel.
  • Transports equipment, specimens or documents to field personnel, laboratory, clients or other offices, and provides physical assistance in equipment set-up.
  • Cleans equipment, vehicles and work areas.
  • Assists other technicians or professional staff on routine tasks.

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Complete safety orientation program
  • Abide by safety and personal protective equipment policies
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and avoid unsafe behaviors
  • Drive defensively, avoid preventable accidents and always wear a seat belt
  • Attend regularly scheduled safety trainings
  • Report all unsafe conditions to your Supervisor

  • In accordance with company procedures, prepares field reports for projects documenting activities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A large portion of time spent in this position is on construction sites. We will train technicians on site safety and will provide personal protective equipment to be used while representing RGI.

Overnight travel may be required with this position.

Education/Experience:

  • Student actively pursuing a four year or advanced degree in Civil, Geology and/or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and judgment capabilities
  • Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications

License:

  • Valid driver’s license (unless arrangements have been made with approval of Corporate Office).

Must have reliable transportation for traveling to construction sites and returning equipment and samples to the office.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Must have reliable transportation for travelling to construction sites and returning equipment and samples to the office. Hourly pay ranges from $20-$25/hour depending on experience for work chargeable to a project or previously approved administrative time (including training).
  • No benefits provided since this position is currently a part time, as needed, hourly position.
