The Riley Group’s Geotechnical Engineering department is looking for a Geotechnical Technician to help perform a variety of geotechnical construction observation and monitoring services.

General Responsibilities:

This position will work under the close supervision of higher-level technicians and/or staff professionals, perform routine field and/or laboratory work, transport samples or documents, and perform non-technical functions and office tasks.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Perform sampling or testing as directed.
  • Provide assistance to other field and/or laboratory personnel.
  • Transport equipment, specimens, and documents to field personnel, laboratory, clients, and other office locations.
  • Transports equipment, specimens or documents to field personnel, laboratory, clients or other offices, and provides physical assistance in equipment set-up.
  • Provide physical assistance in equipment set-up.
  • Clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
  • Assist other technicians and professional staff with routine tasks.
  • Demonstrate growth in this role as training and responsibility with work assignments continuously increases.

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Complete RGI safety onboarding orientation program.
  • Abide by RGI Health and Safety Manual and Site-Specific Health and Safety Plans (including all current RGI COVID-19 protocols).
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and avoid unsafe behaviors.
  • Drive defensively, avoid preventable accidents and distractions, and always wear a seat belt. Cell phone usage while driving is strictly prohibited.
  • Attend regularly scheduled safety training and staff meetings.
  • Immediately report any unsafe conditions to your supervisor.

Essential Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read and understand English.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow general instructions and equipment operation manuals, as well as possess the ability to collect, summarize, and report data.
  • In accordance with company procedures, prepare field reports for projects documenting field activities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, sometimes precarious places, outside weather conditions including extreme cold, extreme heat, and exposure to wildfire smoke. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A large portion of time spent in this position is on construction sites. Technicians will be trained on site safety and will be provided personal protective equipment to use while representing RGI.

Overnight travel may be required with this position.

Education/Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Civil/Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.

License & Registration:

  • A Valid Driver’s License (unless arrangements have been made with the approval of RGI’s Corporate Office).
  • Employees are required to provide proof of Automobile Insurance if they plan to use their personal vehicle for business purposes. Automobile Insurance MUST be maintained at all times per Washington State Law.
  • Preferred Qualification: Registration as a Geologist-in-Training

Other Requirements:

Employees must have reliable transportation to successfully complete the duties of this role. Travel will be necessary to reach various construction sites and return equipment and samples to and from the office.

Benefits & Pay:

  • This is an as needed, non-exempt, hourly position based on project load and staffing needs.
  • Rate is $20-25 per hour based on experience.
  • PTO accrual at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked (per FMLA/Washington State law).
  • Cell phone reimbursement of $45/month
  • Mileage reimbursement at IRS published rate/mile.
  • Eligibility to participate in RGI’s 401K per plan specifications.
  • Please Note: Due to the nature of this position, as needed, temporary employees are not eligible for employer health insurance benefits.
